FSB Rita

The unit is "B" Battery, 1/5 Arty.  The photo was taken at FSB Rita October 1968, only a couple days before the ground assault on Nov 1.  1LT Glen Carver (Carter?) was preparing to leave the Battery to return home.  He had earned a Silver Star while serving as a forward observer (FO) with 1/26th INF (Dobol).  The powers that be decided to have a formation to present him with the medal.  The guys in the battery knew a formation was a bad idea because we were being mortared several times a day.  They formed us up anyway.  There are two full bird colonels making the presentation, names unknown.  LTC Rogers is standing off to the left, watching.  The tall guy with his back to the camera is 1LT Michael Heady, the battery XO.  As soon as I snapped this picture, but before I had a chance to take a second one, we heard mortar tubes popping.  The troops scattered to their guns and began shooting counter mortar.
